What should win? The Social Network
This is not a movie about Facebook. I mean, it is, obviously. But this is a movie about friendship, love, greed, youthfulness, jealousy, competition, arrogance, hierarchy. With Aaron Sorkin penning, high hopes were to be had, but no-one could have predicted the profound (and brilliantly-told) statements it made on the current social climate. More often than not, films made about today fail to actually reflect such, but this one couldn't have done it better.

Who should win? David Fincher
If any film is going to dominate the night, it has to be The Social Network. The cuts between the legalities within the boardroom and the actual making of Facebook were played out fantastically. When you felt sorry for Zuckerberg, he'd go and defame his best friend. By the end, the audience were divided over who to root for. The first and last scenes total all that is needed to be said, and there's not one unnecessary sequence in between. A* for David Fincher.

Who should win? Javier Bardem
Yes, the movie is almost three hours long and is by no means a laugh-fest in the name of Bill Hicks. However, Mr Bardem may well be the best actor in Hollywood. If not at least in Spain. His role as cancer-ridden single-father Uxbal was portrayed with nothing but heart-wrenching emotional sincerity. The movie was good, but what a performance. If No Country's Anton was Bardem's sort-of Travis Bickle, this one is his raging bull.

Best Actress
Annette Bening (The Kids Are All Right), Nicole Kidman (Rabbit Hole), Jennifer Lawrence (Winter's Bone), Natalie Portman (Black Swan), Michelle Williams (Blue Valentine)
Who should win? Natalie Portman
Where to begin? Portman herself has admitted that for a while this film took over her life. The dark paranoia embedded within the psyche of her ballerina Nina needed an inviolable take to pull off, as the actress proved herself to be one of the finest of her generation. Sadly, she's now in a rom-com opposite Ashton Kutcher. This we can forgive her for, her outing in Black Swan being so substantial. The pardoning ends here, though.

Just Shut It Down

I'm not saying I don't want Michael and Holly to be together. Of course I do. But the way in which it was finally played out - she almost channelling his mind while he's lost in Scranton because Jim left him at a gas station - was atrocious. Idealistic and unconvincing. The US Office was at one point very funny and ep-after-ep gold. Now, we're lucky to get one decent story every few instalments. NBC won't end it 'cause they're desperate. Carell is right to exit. Somebody, please, finish this show pronto.

Album Of Last Month

White Lies 'Ritual' (Fiction)

Whatever it was Editors were trying with their last 'industrial' record, it did not total a job well done. And Interpol, following the exit of bassman Carlos, they've seemingly lost all reason and their black charm. Ergo, the space of depressingly feel-good indie needs a big front to fill it - meet White Lies II. On their second LP, the white-picket-fence threesome are, well, kinda the same, only a bit less mousy with their amps. 'Bigger Than Us' was the swift-and-mighty single, but there's the poppy, Cure-like 'Peace & Quiet' and the deliciously broody 'Turn The Bells' to master all domains. Yes, affable. And yes, aces.
